Columbia, S.C. (April 22, 2024) – Starting this evening, vehicle traffic on South Main Street will shift west toward the Assembly Street side, with one lane in each direction open for motor vehicle traffic.
The traffic shift takes place as the second phase of construction on the South Main Street Streetscape Project begins. Phase II construction includes the installation of curbs, driveways, drainage structures, and sidewalks on the east side, closest to Sumter Street. Pendleton Street median construction will also take place during this phase, and SCDOT will announce traffic impact information as that work begins.
Businesses on both sides of South Main Street will continue to be accessible. SCDOT asks the traveling public to use caution in and around this active work zone.
The purpose of the project is to improve pedestrian safety and enhance the
appearance of South Main Street between Blossom and Pendleton streets. The
project is partnership among the State of South Carolina, the City of Columbia,
Richland County, and the University of South Carolina.
