All lanes from exit 80 to 83 closed overnight Friday and Saturday
March 3, 2023 – SCDOT has started removing the out-of-service railroad bridge over Interstate 85 near Spartanburg between exits 80 and 83. Two spans were removed Thursday, March 2 at the south end of the bridge, with two additional spans to be removed this weekend, weather permitting.
Today crews will prepare to close all lanes of I-85 between exits 80 and 83 tonight and tomorrow night. All lanes in both directions will be closed during the following times:
- Saturday, March 4, midnight to 6 a.m.

Sunday, March 5, midnight to 6 a.m.
SCDOT advises motorists to use caution while driving in this area and to plan for detours during these times. Detour information included below.
"The railroad bridge has been a major obstacle in the way of our efforts to widen I-85 for years," said Secretary of Transportation Christy A. Hall, P.E. "We are pleased to remove the bridge and move forward with the remaining widening project."
SCDOT expects to complete the Interstate 85 Widening Project by late 2024.

Northbound Traffic
Exit I-85 at Exit 80. Turn right onto Gossett Road. Turn left onto Cannons Campground Road. Turn left onto Battleground Road. Turn right onto I-85 North.
Southbound Traffic
Exit I-85 at Exit 83. Turn right onto Battleground Road. Turn left onto Mayo Road. Turn left onto Chesnee Highway. Turn right onto I-85 South.
