The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) will begin construction later this month to build a new, improved bridge over Goforth Creek on Oak Ridge Road in Cherokee County.
The current bridge is load restricted and when the new bridge is completed, it will not be weight restricted, improving freight transit in the area. The new bridge will also include safety improvements and new asphalt.
SCDOT is replacing hundreds of deficient bridges across South Carolina as part of the agency's 10-year strategic plan to improve the state's roads and bridges.
Construction is anticipated to begin on October 31, 2022 and is currently expected to be completed in under six months – by the end of March, 2023.
Due to the relatively low traffic volume, and to minimize the impact to property owners in the area, the road will be closed at the bridge site during construction and traffic detoured. The detour route will use Ellis Ferry Road (S-11-63), Boiling Springs Highway (SC 150), Gaffney Road (NC 150) and Bachelor Road (SR-1200). The net detour length is approximately 0.50 miles.
