SCDOT is Prepared for Hurricane Response

Columbia, South Carolina (September 27, 2022) - With forecasts calling for South Carolina to be impacted by Hurricane Ian later this week, workers of the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) are prepared to work around the clock and use all available resources to maintain the safety of South Carolina's roads and bridges.

SCDOT is coordinating preparations with our state, federal and local partners in emergency response and public safety. SCDOT crews in all counties are preparing equipment that would be used for removing trees and other debris from the roads. In addition, SCDOT is monitoring traffic flow from Florida and Georgia evacuees to determine any impacts on our transportation network.

SCDOT workers in high impact areas will be available to shift to 24-hour operations for the duration of the storm and aftermath.

SCDOT FACT SHEET: Hurricane Preparations & Operations

  • SCDOT is actively preparing for Hurricane Ian that is expected to move through the state beginning Thursday.
  • The Hurricane Operations Plan has been activated.
  • SCDOT crews in all counties are inspecting and preparing equipment that would be used for removing trees and other debris from the roads.
  • Crews in counties less likely to see severe storm damage are also preparing to support the impacted counties in road-clearing operations.
  • Barricades are being prepared in the event some roads and bridges must be closed due to storm damage. In addition, traffic control signage is being prepared to warn motorists before reaching closures and indicating detours.
  • SCDOT uses intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to manage traffic flow. Real time traffic volumes and speeds are collected.  Traffic cameras on the state's major routes can provide visual monitoring. Traffic in neighboring states is monitored to determine the impacts on SC's interstates.
  • A real-time road conditions report is placed on the SCDOT Home Page to indicate open and closed roads and bridges.
  • The information collected through ITS can be used to make decisions about how best to use Incident Responders from our State Highway Emergency Program (SHEP).
