Major Resurfacing Project to begin on I-26 in the Charleston Area

Nighttime Work Planned Sundays-Thursdays

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) plans to resurface a key stretch of interstate highway in the Charleston area beginning in June 2021.

The resurfacing of an 11-mile portion of I-26 from approximately 1 mile east of Ashley Phosphate Road to a third of a mile west of US Highway 17A will be a major improvement for users of this busy stretch of highway.

Traffic volumes vary along this stretch of interstate from 77,000 to 123,000 vehicles per day, making it one of most heavily traveled areas in the state.

All work will be done at nighttime, from Sundays to Thursdays, to inconvenience the motoring public as little as possible. The approximate hours of work will be 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. There will be both single-lane and multi-lane closures during the resurfacing project.

Resurfacing will begin in June, but a specific start date has not been set. Prior to the start of resurfacing work, initial patching work will be completed along this section of I-26 starting Tuesday night, June 1, weather permitting.

The patching and resurfacing are part of a $10.9 million emergency contract to repair this deteriorating section of I-26.

Once patching work is completed, resurfacing will begin on the exit and entrance ramps followed by the mainline within the project corridor. Crews will remove and replace the existing surface with new asphalt on all travel lanes, including shoulder/emergency lanes and off/on ramps.

The project is scheduled to be completed in October 2021.

Drivers are asked to use caution and watch for highway workers in the nighttime work zones. "Let 'em Work. Let 'em live."
