The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has scheduled a media briefing 3 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2021, concerning the Interstate 77 southbound bridge repair project.
The media briefing will be held at the bridge site. Additional details and instructions for the media will be announced later today.
SCDOT Deputy Secretary for Engineering Leland Colvin is scheduled to provide an update.
The I-77 southbound bridge over the Catawba River in York County was closed for extensive, around-the-clock repairs beginning 9 p.m. May 6, 2021, and with a scheduled completion of 5 a.m. May 24, 2021. Traffic has been diverted to the northbound side of I-77 during the repair project.
Work has been ongoing 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to expedite the project as much as possible.
Built in the 1970s, the I-77 southbound bridge deck over the Catawba River has shown clear signs of deterioration and has required many repairs during the past decade, often taking several days and impacting traffic.
